Sad Hound

I had no idea that this was a "thing," but apparently the whole sad hound-dog coin bank phenomenon is real... or at least it was at one time. A while ago I posted something here about a sad hound-dog coin bank made by My Toy Inc. in 1971, and now I've found this similar version by Russ Berrie from 1973.

One banana, two banana, three banana, four...

I grew up watching a lot of Hanna-Barbera as a kid, and The Banana Splits were there for me pretty much every day after school. Even then I knew that this was weird stuff, but just the same, I had to keep tuning in to see what adventures Fleegle, Bingo, Drooper and Snorky would have next.

What I've only found out recently, was that Dakin made a set of figures of the four characters. Here's "Drooper" in all of his hard plastic and soft vinyl glory. I'd love to have a full set of these, but they're apparently pretty hard to come by.
